About

We believe in journalism. We believe in the power of journalism to inform people, give voice to the unheard, and hold power to account.

That is exactly why the media itself deserves attention: who owns it, who funds it, how it works, when it gets things right, and when it gets things wrong.

Media Kurakani is a media watchdog and meta-journalism initiative based in Kathmandu, Nepal.

We read, appreciate, critique, question, and create media.

Who We Are

Media Kurakani is founded and edited by Rabi Raj Baral, a journalist, researcher, trainer, and media educator based in Nepal.

He started the platform in 2012 as a journalism student who could not stop asking questions about the media.

It is now published by Meta Media Pvt. Ltd., the registered company behind the platform.

What We Do?

  • Read news and social media closely — for accuracy, bias, and influence.

  • Appreciate and spotlight impactful journalism and media practices.

  • Critique how media organisations work: their ownership, incentives, ethics, and editorial choices.

  • Question claims — fact-checking and debunking misinformation and disinformation.

  • Create original journalism, explainers, and media-literacy resources so people can read the media critically for themselves.

Why This Matters

A free, independent press is one of democracy's most valuable institutions— it informs people and holds power to account.

But the press is also a form of power, shaped by owners, advertisers, politics, and platforms.

Looking closely at the media, celebrating what works and questioning what does not, is how it stays trustworthy and independent.

We hold the media to a high standard because we believe in the power of good journalism.

How Others Describe Our Work

  • …What appears to be a positive development that may to some extent compensate for some deficiencies in objective knowledge about the media, in the past few years, we have seen the emergence of new media portals and social media channels that often focus on or spotlight media issues. Foremost in this category is mediakurakani.com, a media watchdog site... Dharma Adhikari in República Daily (2017)

  • … Media Kurakani is a platform for discussing media messages and its dimensions. It not only prioritizes the impactful content missed out by the mainstream media but also does critical reviews on the doings of the media themselves. Sudhamshu Dahal in Bodhi: An Interdisciplinary Journal (2024)

About Our Name

Kurakani (कुराकानी) is Nepali term for conversation. Media Kurakani means a conversation about the media— open, critical, and ongoing.

Our tagline, behind the news, says the rest: we go past the headline to the story underneath it.

Transparency

A watchdog has to be accountable too. We are committed to being open about how we work and how we are funded.
